How many of us have heard or have been told “You don’t question God? Though this may seem as something linked to reverencing His supremacy over us all. But many of us have taken this in the wrong way. I inclusive, sort of believed this for a long time too. I seldom asked God “why”. Because I believed asking Him means you are questioning Him or somewhere in my head, I felt He was too big in His ways to be asked such a question.
As much as there is a part of this that is true; as God is all sovereign and He is big in His ways. But with or without our questions posed to Him, He is still the same Big God – the Almighty.
Let me correct some of our beliefs with respect to “don’t ask God why” etc.
And with this, I will reference a verse –
I do not call you servants any longer, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you [My] friends because I have revealed to you everything that I have heard from My Father. You have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you and I have appointed and placed and purposefully planted you, so that you would go and bear fruit and keep on bearing, and that your fruit will remain and be lasting, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name [as My representative] He may give to you.
John 15:15-16 (AMP)
Reading this text is refreshing. But firstly, we will focus on verse 15 for now. Jesus here affirmed us and said “no longer have I called you slaves, I have called you friends” (paraphrased).
So while we are still meditating on that, let’s reflect on the life of a slave.
A slave is someone who is under authority, and he or she is FORCED to obey. Here, a slave can’t question his or her master at all. ❌
But in the case of a friend. Looking at it from our personal relationships with our friends. We can ask our friends anything and we can talk with them freely. We can even tickle them as the case may be. That was on a lighter note. 😁
But the focus is on the leverage our personal relationship with another whom we call friend brings us. We are not under any duress. We are not forced, but rather it comes with ease.
So what is God saying to us from that verse again? He is saying “Come”. He is saying “I am with us, giving you my maximum attention, talk to me”. He is saying “Open up to me” and He is saying “Ask me”.
Yes, He is saying “ask me”. We are no longer called slaves, we are called God’s friends and as much as this may still be all new to you, for now, I will like you to be open to this newness He is offering you and I. And this He has given us ages ago. This leverage; this benefit has been freely offered to us if only we would be willing and open to accept it.
I would like to reference the person of Habakkuk. Habakkuk said it all and questioned God repeatedly but guess what, God still gave Him clarity – God replied to him (Habakkuk). He spoke right back to Him. 😊
Let’s read these texts, stated below together. (You can also read the whole book of Habakkuk for a better understanding during your personal study). 📝
The oracle (a burdensome message—a pronouncement from God) which Habakkuk the prophet saw. O Lord, how long will I call for help And You will not hear? I cry out to You, “Violence!” Yet You do not save. Why do You make me see iniquity, And cause me to look on wickedness? For destruction and violence are before me; Strife continues and contention arises.
Habakkuk 1:1-3 (AMP)
And,
I will stand at my guard post and station myself on the tower, And I will keep watch to see what He will say to me, And what answer I will give [as His spokesman] when I am reproved. Then the Lord answered me and said, “Write the vision and engrave it plainly on [clay] tablets So that the one who reads it will run.
Habakkuk 2:1-2 (AMP)
After all these happened, the posture of Habakkuk changed as the answers He got revived in him, hope. And that is why the book ended with these endnotes from him:
Yet I will [choose to] rejoice in the Lord; I will [choose to] shout in exultation in the [victorious] God of my salvation! The Lord God is my strength [my source of courage, my invincible army]; He has made my feet [steady and sure] like hinds’ feet And makes me walk [forward with spiritual confidence] on my high places [of challenge and responsibility]. For the choir director, on my stringed instruments.
Habakkuk 3:18-19 (AMP)
The blessing of knowing that God is our friend should help us know that asking God questions when we are in a fix or weary in heart, isn’t bad. In fact, He wants us to talk to Him. And I believe this is why Jesus had to state that loud and clear – “I no longer call you slaves, rather I call you friend” (paraphrased).
He wants us to know His intent and plans for us per time. And also when we are in doubt, He desires that we gain clarity to see past the ruckus our mind is projecting. I believe that is also why He gave us the Holy Spirit so that He guides us in all truth per time. He doesn’t want us to be clueless about anything – not you and the same applies to me. 📌
Let’s draw near to Him to gain clarity and be free to ask questions. The God who is “unquestionable” is the God we know as “the I am that I am”. And this simply means we are not questioning His existence or His abilities, because He is who He says He is, and nothing can change that truth. But then we can always talk to Him – freely.
May His words light up in you. And may we come to the fullness of the fellowship He desires for you and I. (Amen)

I absolutely love this post. I often ask God why and as his children and his friend as you so aptly reminded us, we are privileged to ask questions. Another component we were created as thinking beings and as such we are always on a quest for understanding.

Questions help us understand but our intuitive minds being the guide or the leader of thd rational mind is better as long as we trust God’s plans are for our betterment and evolution ir growth eternally .
We may not comprehend all details all at once but our hearts and minds could conceivably realize that God later on has the best for us that matches our state of being and our deeds and our energy type chosen by us …God also gives us what we put out to the world multiplied…

Wonderful post, Mercy. I love that you mentioned that we are His friends – for that is just what we are (along with being His children). The Lord wants us to come to Him with our questions – for after all, He’s the One with all the answers. Tony Evans said something that resonated with me when folks asked how he’s dealing with his wife’s death. He said, “It’s okay to ask God questions. It’s never okay to question His authority.” When we view the Lord through lens of respect and privilege – our posture changes – just like Habbukuk did, and so many other folks in scripture.

Great article. ,John 15:16-16 are my all time favorite. The first time I read these scriptures “Jesus calls us friend,” and that he has chosen us warmed my heart. These scriptures taught me the great LOVE Fayher has for His children, which we are. Thanks for the teaching.

Sure, people take wrong by understanding god unquestionable, God’s existence and power , supremacy is unquestionable but God says come and ask me , release your feelings, tell your in or out of life here, we can ask and told anything to God, but his omnipotence is unquestionable. Really nice post.

The scripture says if any man lacks wisdom let him ask of God (James 1:5). The caution is when we shake our finger at God like God “why did you let this happen or that happen” as if we are pissed at God for allowing a certain situation.

I’m glad we’re free to ask the Lord anything. He is our closest friend. When we ask “why”, He hears that prayer like all the rest of our prayers. We can trust Him to answer our prayers. ❤️
