We live in a world where this word is popular, but yet not often practiced.
Many at times we are faced with choosing to act the way we feel as against what Christ in us would entreat us to do – to show empathy.
Jesus is our model of empathy and that is why He is someone we all can approach. And we can be free enough to share our issues with Him, without any form of judging.
“For we do not have a High Priest Who is unable to understand and sympathize and have a shared feeling with our weaknesses and infirmities and liability to the assaults of temptation, but One Who has been tempted in every respect as we are, yet without sinning.”
Hebrews 4:15 AMPC
Looking at some of the experiences shared of Jesus’ life while He was here on earth in human form. He just knew how to empathize with the issues we would call “abominable” or “beyond redemption”.
One of His experiences that I love is this:
“The religion scholars and Pharisees led in a woman who had been caught in an act of adultery. They stood her in plain sight of everyone and said, “Teacher, this woman was caught red-handed in the act of adultery. Moses, in the Law, gives orders to stone such persons. What do you say?” They were trying to trap him into saying something incriminating so they could bring charges against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger in the dirt. They kept at him, badgering him. He straightened up and said, “The sinless one among you, go first: Throw the stone.” Bending down again, he wrote some more in the dirt.
Hearing that, they walked away, one after another, beginning with the oldest. The woman was left alone. Jesus stood up and spoke to her. “Woman, where are they? Does no one condemn you?”
“No one, Master.” “Neither do I,” said Jesus. “Go on your way. From now on, don’t sin.””
John 8:6-11 MSG
I can only imagine how the religious leaders felt at first thinking Jesus was going to judge her but instead He showed her mercy.
Jesus is our role model as Christians and we can only learn from Him because He relates with us with grace.
Some things to ponder upon:
- How have you been extending the grace you have received and still receiving from Him, unto others?
- Are you more concerned about how you feel than the effects your actions have on that life or lives?
It’s time for a rain check. What would you do differently henceforth?
Now the big question:
Do you want to learn empathy?
Then you have just the right role model to learn from. He is Jesus!
May His word spur our hearts to love like He would; to show grace like He would and to teach others love by living a life of empathy. (Amen) 🙏🏻
Blessings. 🤗

Mercy, you always challenge us in creative ways to live out our faith, and here is no different. Empathy chooses to love our neighbors and even our enemies! It does not condone sin, but confronts it realizing we are sinners, also.

Thanks to God for His words. 🙌
Yes, knowing that we were also once a sinner, but redeemed makes us love even those the world feels are “unlovable” 📌
Thank you for your comments and for sharing this link. I will check it out. 🙂

Very timely! Things are still not back to normal here thanks to covid, and it’s easy in general to give in to frustration. But we all need grace! And we need to pour the grace God consistently gives us into others. I need to pray God would help me to do this better with my son. Thanks, Mercy!

Amen… great message and ending prayer… for the first time in a long while, I was able to see your post live on my feed today …
having read the post, I must admit I need more of God’s grace and help to measure up… no matter how much I try, I don’t always measure up, but I’m glad that the Lord knows my heart and intentions, and will continue to help me in certain areas when I call upon him

A much need reminder Mercy, to extend that grace that we have so freely received. And showing empathy is one way to do it. And we can do it only in His strength.

When my wife and I were young with 3 little kids and no money, we sold our old car for way less than it’s value to a younger couple expecting their first child with even less money. The engine died the first week they had it and accused us of knowing it was bad (we were going to use it for a long trip but it sold). God taught us empathy. The right thing to do (we felt) was to pay for the repairs so they had a good car even though it made us look like they were right in accusing us (There’s much more to the story). That was hurdle for us and it cost us financially but we gained so much more. After al how much does it cost to have character that you want your kids to emulate someday?

Empathy is much needed. It is a privilege to show the compassion and love of Jesus to others. We must stay close to His heart so we are able to stay sensitive to the needs of others. Thanks for sharing this little sis ❤️

His grace runs deep and He extends it to us freely and readily. It’s only right that we pay it forward and show grace to ourselves and most importantly, to others.

This is excellent. I think sometimes we disqualify ourselves from doing God’s call because we try to micromanage the logistics. God qualifies the called. I know God has entrusted me with groups of people who on paper we have nothing in common but we have walked, prayed and cried together which develops an honest bond. Thank you for reminding us that God called us to emphasize and not judge others including ourselves.
