🌻 Are you willing to pick it up❓

At His command

I’m still in awe of how graceful the study plan I read sometime last week was. I will be sharing a part of it that hits me deep. Also, try to relate it to us as well.

So we all know about the man – Moses yeah?

Smiles. I trust we do. Yeah, Moses was a man who preferred not to be noticed and got called by God, to do something way out of His comfort zone.

Sign of surrender

The part of His life that I will be sharing on, is the encounter he had with the Lord during the burning bush experience. Moses was told to throw down his staff. And in the study plan I read, that showed a sign of surrender and humility. It’s that part where God was telling him that it was time to quit the shepherding of sheep. And it was time to move on to shepherding His people by being the channel through which the people of Israel will be delivered.

“Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘What is that thing in your hand?’ Moses answered, ‘It is a stick.’ The Lord said, ‘Throw it down on the ground.’ So Moses threw it on the ground. Then the stick became a snake! Moses ran away from the snake.”

Exodus 4:2-3 EASY

The part that hit me deep is the part when the Lord told him to pick up the rod he had throw on the ground and this time around, the rod wasn’t just a piece of stick but a snake. Phew!, And he wasn’t asked to pick it up anywhere else, but by the tail using his bare hands. A life snake! 😳

“Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Take hold of the snake’s tail with your hand.’ So Moses caught the snake with his hand. Then it became a stick in his hand again.”

Exodus 4:4 EASY

I can only imagine if I was the one in that scenario. Or let’s say someone else who hates all things creepy but has to pick it up with his or her bare hands. One would think to one’s self or even voice it out to God that “Lord, are you joking with me? Why don’t you first kill it, then allow me pick it up?” But really the idea of picking up a dead snake is also scary and gross. 🙈

But Moses did pick the snake up anyway. That was the next thing that was recorded “So Moses caught the snake with his hand….”. I’m not sure Moses thought much about it but he simply trusted and picked it up. Maybe in his thought he was like “God you asked me to, I trust that you won’t let the snake harm me”. Either way, he obeyed.

Cast your rod

Bringing this scenario home as I promised to. I couldn’t help but think of it in a way that I could relate with in my current day life or even in our current time and experiences.

And what came to mind is the place of one “starting over”. So the Lord told Moses to throw down his rod (what he is known with) and that represent times when God tells us to let down the plans we have or something we have mastered so much or an occupation that was like the “yin” to our “yang”. Something we are known by or so familiar with over the years that it’s like our identity. And God says “Dami or Tolu, it’s time to place that identity you’ve know aside and cast it before me”. So you did even though it wasn’t easy to.

But to burst your bubble, after months or weeks of anticipating the next, and the Lord just left you in the “rest mode”. You got settled into that phase and then He shows up and tells you this time around, “Dami, it’s time to pick up your rod”. But this time around it’s something you are scared of (representing the snake in our text). And He further states this: “I know it is unfamiliar, but I want you to pick it up anyway”.

We trust you even when it’s scary

Phew! I can only imagine myself in this. The scare of starting something new isn’t something I so much like to experience because I have many questions I don’t have an answer to, in such a time. And that is how most of us are. It is scary yes! But just as Moses did, we are encouraged to pick it up anyway as instructed and trust that the Lord will set our course running just as He did for Moses.

“Then Moses said to the Lord, ‘My Lord, I cannot speak well. I speak slowly and I speak with difficulty. I never could speak well. And even now, when you have spoken to me, I still cannot speak well.’ Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Who has made human mouths? Who makes a person that cannot speak? Who makes a person that cannot hear? Who makes a person who can see, or who cannot see? It is I, the Lord God! Now go! I will help you to speak well. I will teach you what you must say.’”

Exodus 4:10-12 EASY

Yeah, the rest of the story is. Moses still didn’t see himself doing it and the graceful part is that while he kept on saying it out, God kept telling him the plans He had for the journey. We all know that Moses later on ended up being the Israelites deliverer. And the rest is history.

May we all grow in our confidence of trusting God’s ways. 🙏🏻

It’s okay to be scared at first. Moses was, but the good part is that he voiced out his fears and seemingly inadequacies to God and God made a way for Him.

God is always faithful to work in us and through us. He is committed to His working in us. 🙌🏼

Blessings. 🙏🏻

Happy new week.

Such good points- letting go is a sign of surrender. And are we willing to pick up something that may seem so unfamiliar and scary. Really thought provoking. I pray that I would be obedient to the Lords directive.

  5. I love this post, Mercy. The voice of God is the mystery behind the obedience of Moses. Sadly, many believers don’t know when God speaks, and many don’t even believe they can hear from God. You can’t hear from God and doubt him. As much as faith comes by hearing the word of God, unshakable faith (trust) comes by hearing directly from God. We are all virgins to something new. And it always scares us to embrace a change. If we have done it before, God will not ask us to do it again. Why would God ask us to do what we have done before? In this circumstance, all we need to do is trust God and obey Him. When God leads, he provides and protects. Do have a wonderful day!

Came running to read the full story, at the mention of Moses. He is my favorite Bible character 😍.
The most confusing one is when it was even God that told me to do a thing initially, then after sometime, He says not to (or to quit)…and you begin to fight it like 🤔it was YOU that told me to do this (We die here😠).

The most important thing is to keep living by EVERY word which proceedeth from the mouth of the Lord…even though it might seem contracting to the last commandment.

    Thank you sis❤

There is a lot to learn from him.

Haha. That feeling. And you wonder, did I hear well at first. 😂
But thankful we can stay “updated” with Him. I’m learning not to fight that. And just take it as He chooses to lead me in every season. 🙂

      Apt! I love this. 💯

  10. GOD told Moses to do something dangerous and Moses listened as HE did exactly that and nothing bad happened so this tells us that if GOD allows challenges to come in our lives it means that it’s something we can overcome easily. When you face challenges just face them and know you are already victorious.

  12. I really like what we read about Moses in the Bible because I find I can relate to him so well! Not in the whole pick-up-the-snake scene but all the excuses he later told God as to why he wasn’t the right man to free the Israelites. I often find myself inadequate like Moses did. But God kept reminding him He’d be with Him. God would accomplish His purposes through Moses. I find myself needing to remember that God can accomplish what He wants of me too, despite my deficiencies. Blessings, Mercy!

Powerful post. I tell my husband he is my Moses. He resist anything at first that God wants him to do except give money. And money is the least thing we have to give away but we have never went hungry, without clothes, a roof over our head. He has blessed us greatly. I remember the night that God spoke to my heart that a huge change was coming. It scared me I walked to the other side of the church, found my pastor wife to pray for me. A few weeks later while we were getting our car fixed my husband said, Hon, I think God wants us to go into overseas missions. Because I had prayed, God whatever it takes help me to be like you, help me to be willing to do whatever you ask of us. So, God had me prepared for what He had spoken to my husband about . With in three years we were getting off the plane in Bolivia. Seven years there and then we went to Papua New Guinea…Yep I get this one and with Him I can trust Him for any thing He ask. Great post.
