The Challenge Of The Fifth Toe

This is a theme from my recent experience with my son, Jason. ๐Ÿ™‚

In recent times, we have been encouraging him to try wearing his socks by himself, amongst other things. And while he is at this, we watch and guide him if he needs help or heโ€™s stuck at any point. And this comes with a lot of repetition and patience. Anyone with a toddler can relate. ๐Ÿ˜…

Here is the bridge to the story:๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿพ

It is interesting to watch him do this and get better at it, although it might not be perceived this way through the lens of my son.

Why? Because most of the time, his smallest toes (precisely the 5th toes) are caught in the socks while trying it on. And after a few attempt to pull it up, with the smallest toe still stuck outside of the socks, my dear son takes the socks out. At this point, he has exhausted his perseverance. ๐Ÿ˜…

So he either moves on to do something else or lays on the floor sideways, giving me this impression: Well I have tried mama, I just need a break.

At this point, I start motivating and telling him – Jay, you can do this. Youโ€™ve done it before. Okay, letโ€™s do this together. Etc.

I had a similar experience the earlier hours of today, and I found myself smiling afterwards. While I pondered on this particular experience, the theme for this blog post came to mind. I knew there was something ABBA wanted me to share on it.

His Message

The move from being stuck at the 5th-toe, and getting the sock fully in its place is Perseverance!

How many times have we tried out something new to us? Or an instruction given to us by God? And because we tried it the 1st time and it didnโ€™t work out. We tried it again the 2nd time or maybe the 3rd or 4th time and it still wasnโ€™t working, we gave up that idea or instruction. ๐Ÿค”

I remember the story of the king of Israel (King Johoash) who needed to overcome another nation that terrified him and he only struck the ground thrice.

Then he said, โ€œTake the arrows,โ€ and the king took them. Elisha told him, โ€œStrike the ground.โ€ He struck it three times and stopped. The man of God was angry with him and said, โ€œYou should have struck the ground five or six times; then you would have defeated Aram and completely destroyed it. But now you will defeat it only three times.โ€โ€

Three times is not bad in most peopleโ€™s opinion, including mine. BUT, if he had pushed further and did more than this, he could have gotten not only an immediate victory but one that was complete – a total victory! (Verse 19)

Itโ€™s interesting how โ€œtrying just one more time or few more timesโ€ can do in oneโ€™s life and an entire generation.

Perseverance!!!

While itโ€™s sometimes hard to keep trying something again and again, putting in the work while you await the results. It is part of Paulโ€™s admonition to us, the church.

โ€œTherefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,โ€

Since every scripture was inspired by the Holy Spirit, I believe it was an instruction the Holy Spirit needed us to bear in mind, as we journey through life. ๐Ÿ“

Today I encourage you to give it one more try. And build up that perseverance for the race ahead.

A Vivid Example:

A runner/sprinter may sometimes run out of breath while running. Despite the aches on their side or in their legs (depending on the distance to be covered), he or she perseveres through the race, unto the finish line.

There is a video I saw a long time ago of a sprinter who sprained his leg during a race but despite this, kept running and he could have backed out of the race. But his decision caused him to be an inspiration to others.
